Culturally Inclusive and Non-Discrimination Resources

From the AAMC. These clinical vignettes are a part of a series highlighting various aspects of the health of LGBT and gender nonconforming populations and are designed to give learners the opportunity to analyze clinician-patient communication strategies. The series can be used in a variety of ways from independent learning to small group learning to large group learning. Each clip is generally three-five minutes long with discussion questions and additional resources listed at the end of each scenario. In an ideal setting, the learner would be able to practice the communication strategies identified after viewing the vignettes.

The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics has a major research focus on culturally competent care; that is, health care that is sensitive to the differing values and needs of cultural subgroups within our pluralistic society. This section of our Web site provides articles, cases, and commentary emerging from this research.

A collection of public health teaching cases, links to other case collections and compilations, and teaching activities, scenarios, and examples. Many cases are available in the T.H. Chan School case collection offered by Harvard Business Publishing. Others are free to download.

The Enduring Legacies Native Cases Initiative began in 2006 as a partnership between The Evergreen State College, Northwest Indian College, Salish Kootenai College, and Grays Harbor College. The University of Alaska-Anchorage and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks later became partners as well as the National Indian Child Welfare Association. All of the partners wrote a substantial number of cases for this Initiative.

From the US Department of Health and Human Services. Watch case study videos about a culturally and linguistically appropriate clinical encounter to learn more about applying the National CLAS Standards in daily work. Videos are specifically geared toward pediatrics, surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology.

Case studies are presented by topic and contain quick recaps of some common cultural misunderstandings.

This guide is part of a growing collection of resources, in addition to existing AAMC tools and reports that provide a framework for understanding essential competencies and specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes that may guide cultural competence curriculum development.

The Georgetown University National Center for Cultural Competence (NCCC) provides national leadership and contributes to the body of knowledge on cultural and linguistic competency within systems and organizations. Major emphasis is placed on translating evidence into policy and practice for programs and personnel concerned with health and mental health care delivery, administration, education and advocacy. Permission is required if the materials and resources are to be modified in any way.

From the National Collaborative for Education to Address the Social Determinants of Health. An indexed database of curricula and assessment materials (including courses, simulation, SP cases, and experimental learning opportunities) that are ready to be implemented or adapted to ones setting.
