Free Image Resources

The following resources are freely available on the internet. Copyright information is listed below each resource if available.

ASH Image Bank
- An extensive online library of screen-sized blood disease images & cases for educational use.
- Users must create a free account to download images.
- Accredited educational institutions are granted permission to download & reproduce the images and written content from the image bank for distribution in the classroom.
Bassett Collection of Stereoscopic Images of Human Anatomy
- Images from the 1962 edition of Stereoscopic Atlas of Human Anatomy.
- Content Licensed under: Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License.
- Images may be used for noncommercial purposes as long as the author is attributed with the image.
The Cell: An Image Library
- A free access, easy-to-search, public repository of reviewed & annotated images, videos, and animations of cells from a variety of organisms.
- Collection includes: cell architecture, intracellular functionalities, normal & abnormal processes.
- Copyright allowances are listed with each image
Cushing/Whitney Medical Library Digital Collections
- A growing collection of digital resources made available for scholarship.
- Includes: images of medical instruments & artifacts, pathology teaching images, and historical medical posters.
Dermatology Atlas
- contains pictures of dermatology diseases.
- All images are free to use for non-commercial purposes; it's required to provide a link to the website.
Disabled And Here Collection
- A disability-led effort to provide free & inclusive stock images from our own perspective, with photos and illustrations celebrating disabled Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC).
- This collection is published under Creative Commons attribution licensing, which means you can use, share, and adapt the images for free with appropriate credit.
DPDx Parasite Image Library
- Access to all images displayed on the DPDx website.
- Parasites and parasitic diseases are listed alphabetically and are cross-referenced.
Duke Medicine Digital Repository
- The Duke University Medical Center Library Historical Images in Medicine [HIM] Collection.
- Contains 3,000+ photographs, illustrations, engravings, and bookplates from the History of Health & Life Sciences.
- Special collections include: Bartisch's Ophthalmodouleia, The Bookplates, The Four Seasons, and The Stewart Album.
Flickr: Specimens
- Gross and microscopic images of pathology specimens taken by Ed Uthman, a practicing pathologist in Houston, TX.
- Contains over 930 images, all licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) license. This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon the work, even commercially, as long as they credit the original creator.
The Gender Spectrum Collection
- A stock photo library featuring images of trans and non-binary models that go beyond the clichés. This collection aims to help media better represent members of these communities as people not necessarily defined by their gender identities—people with careers, relationships, talents, passions, and home lives.
- You may not create derivative work from the images or use the images for commercial purposes.
- You must give appropriate credit.
Gray's Anatomy Plates
- High-Quality Images from the 20th Edition of Gray's Anatomy (1918).
- Each image has an individualized copyright statements; please review permissions before use.
Health Education Assets Library [HEAL]
- A Collection of 22,000+ freely available digital materials for health sciences education.
- Each image has an individualized copyright statements; please review permissions before use.
Images from the History of Medicine
- 70,000+ images in the collections of the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
- Illustrates the social & historical aspects of medicine from the 15th to 21st Century.
- Includes: portraits, photographs, caricatures, genre scenes, posters, and graphic art.
- Each image has an individual copyright statement; please review permissions before use.
MedPics
- A web-based delivery system of hematology, histology, and pathology images collaboratively developed at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine's Office of Education Computing and Histology and Human Disease course faculty.
MedPix
- A free open access online Medical Image Database with over 53,000 indexed and curated images, from over 13,000 patients.
- The content is organized by disease location (organ system), pathology category, patient profiles, and by image classification and caption.
- For anything other than personal or educational use, contact the original contributor for additional permission requests.
Medscape: Images
- Images from Medscape articles.
- Free registration is required to access some content.
National Eye Institute Media Library
- A collection of eye & vision-related images that can be downloaded in a variety of formats.
- Permission is granted to use these items for educational, news media or research purposes, provided the source for each image is credited.
NCI Visuals Online
- National Cancer Institute hosted images, photographs, and illustrations to assist in conveying meanings, concepts, and stories related to cancer care.
- Collection covers biomedical, science, and patient-care; as well as portraits of past & present directors and staff of the NCI.
- Each image is labeled either "Public Domain" (Free Use) or "Copyright Protected" (Restricted: Obtain Permission before Use).
NHGRI Image Gallery
- Provides imagery related to the genomics research, people, and programs of the National Human Genome Research Institute.
- These images are public domain & may be used freely. They request that you provide a credit to "National Human Genome Research Institute."
NIGMS Image and Video Gallery
- A searchable collection of scientific photos, illustrations, and videos.
- The images and videos in this gallery are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial ShareAlike 3.0.
- This license lets you remix, tweak, and build upon this work non-commercially, as long as you credit and license your new creations under identical terms.
PEIR Digital Library
- This Pathology Education Instructional Resource (PEIR) is a multidisciplinary public access image database for use in medical education.
- The images can be used by educators and institutions for non-profit educational activities. The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Pathology must be acknowledged as the source of images in any software, demonstration, or presentation utilizing these images.
Public Health Image Library [PHIL]
- Universal electronic gateway to the CDC's images.
- Content is organized by categories (people, places, science, etc.) and available as single images, image sets, or multimedia files.
- Images are designated as either "Public Domain" (Free Use) or "Copyright Protected" (Restricted: Obtain Permission before Use).
RSNA Medical Imaging Resource Center
- Radiological Society of North America images are copyrighted and require permission for use not covered under fair use.
Stanford Medicine Newborn Photo Gallery
- Janelle Aby, MD, compiled this photo gallery of infants for educational purposes only.
- Reproduction for commercial purposes is prohibited.
- Utilization of the materials for educating those who care for newborns is permitted with proper citation of source.
The Visible Human Project
- Projects based on the Visible Human Data Set curated by the National Library of Medicine [NLM].
- Check each website for copyright information.
WebPath
- This educational resource contains over 2,700+ images with text that illustrate gross and microscopic pathologic findings along with radiologic imaging associated with human disease conditions.
- WebPath is for your personal and noncommercial use. No one may modify, copy, distribute, transmit, display, or publish any materials contained in WebPath without prior written permission.
Webpathology
- High-quality images of the pathology of benign and malignant neoplasms and related entities.
- Content may be used for individual educational use only. For other usage permission, contact the website.
