Conducting a Literature Review

Methods

  • The search is defined, clearly described, and is sufficiently detailed to permit the review to be replicated.
  • The date of the search is identified.
  • Limits of search and/or filters used are described, including exact date range (including month, day, and year), language of publication, etc.
  • Information sources are described, including the database(s) searched. If you are considering publication of your FIRE project, it is highly recommended that you search more than one database. NOTE: make sure you search databases from the health sciences library’s website.
  • Description of any manual searching that was done (e.g., looking through an article’s references or using the Cited By feature in PubMed).
  • The exact search (called a search string, or search strategy), including all search terms and Boolean operators (AND/OR/NOT), Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), keywords, and/or other controlled vocabulary terms is provided.
  • Inclusion and exclusion criteria are defined and explained.
